Professor Sam Janes

Professor Sam Janes is a Consultant General & Respiratory Medicine Physician. He is based at University College Hospital NHS Trust and sees patients at a number of locations including The Physicians Clinic, Harley Street Diagnostic Center, The Princess Grace Hospital and the Harley Street Clinic.

He holds the prestigious Professor of Respiratory Medicine post at University College Hospital and he specialises in assessing patients with cough, shortness of breath and other chest symptoms. He is Head of the Respiratory Research Department at UCL and Vice Chair of the National Cinical Expert Group on Lung Cancer. He runs several national trials, including the SUMMIT Study screening 25,000 people in London for lung cancer. He has given the keynote lectures on lung cancer at the British Thoracic Society and the European and American National meetings in the last 2 years.

Professor Janes has a academic background of excellence. He won a Medical Research Council (MRC) Training Fellowship for a PhD and then spent a post-doctoral period working in the world famous Cancer Research UK Lincoln's Inn Fields Institute (now the Crick) working on cancer. He then won a hugely competitive MRC Clinician Scientiest award to move to UCL, leading a group focused on lung cancer develoment, early detection and novel treatments for lung diseases. In 2010, he was awarded one of the very few Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Fellowships which he has held for ten years. His work has resulted in both practice changing diagnostic trials for lung disease, the development of new drugs and therapies and he now leads one of the countries largest trials called SUMMIT - involving building four CT screening centres for lung cancer, delivering lung cancer screeening for 25,000 people.

Prof Janes has published over 150 manuscripts on lung disease in the best journals, including Nature, Science, New England Journal of Medicine and he continues his clinics and bronchoscopy lists delivering expert care to his patients.
