Prof Kocher was very helpful and professional when I was under his care, including post-care. He was prepared to operate immediately but explained the risks clearly, allowing me to make the right decision to wait 6 weeks so that it was possible to have surgery when infection was less severe allowing me to recover quickly. The information he provided in his fact sheets was extremely helpful post-recovery.

I’m very grateful for the outstanding care from Prof. Hemant Kocher and his team. He explained the procedure clearly, guided me through the risks and consent, and offered great reassurance. His visit with the full team after surgery was much appreciated. A special thanks to Karen, his excellent secretary, who arranged a prompt review and urgent ultrasound when I developed a fever—ensuring everything was thoroughly checked. I couldn’t have asked for a better consultant and team.

I’m incredibly grateful for the exceptional care provided by Dr Kocher and his team. He explained the procedure and its risks clearly, obtained consent with great care, and offered reassurance throughout. His post-op follow-up with the full team was especially appreciated. A big thank you to Karen, his assistant, who was highly professional and responsive—especially when I developed a fever post-op. She arranged a prompt review and urgent ultrasound, which thankfully ruled out complications. I couldn’t have asked for a better consultant, anaesthetist, and support team. Their professionalism, compassion, and efficiency made all the difference.

New approach offers hope for people with rare eye cancer - Barts Cancer Institute - Queen Mary University of London

A more active approach to monitoring and treating people with a rare eye cancer (known as uveal melanoma) that has spread to the liver could help some patients to live longer, according to researchers at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London. The findings, from a retrospective study of the largest UK cohort of patients with this condition to date, offer an encouraging sign of progress in this rare and difficult-to-treat cancer.

🌍 Today on #worldpancreaticcancerday, we’re highlighting some of the ways our researchers are answering the toughest questions this disease poses to unlock better ways to tackle it. Pancreatic cancer remains one of the hardest types of cancer to treat, with only 5% of patients surviving their disease for 10 or more years. The disease often goes unnoticed until it reaches an advanced stage and has already spread, after which treatment becomes especially challenging. What’s more, this type of cancer embeds itself within a barrier of tough scar tissue, creating a fortress that shields the tumour from treatments and the immune system. We urgently need to understand the disease better to unlock ways to improve its poor outlook. 🟣New research published today sheds light on how star-shaped cells in the pancreas, called stellate cells, emit molecules that alter how aggressive the tumour is. The findings shed light on how we might better diagnose and treat this challenging cancer type. 📰Read the full story: https://www.bartscancer.london/general-news/2023/11/world-pancreatic-cancer-day-research-reveals-molecules-that-alter-the-diseases-spread/ 🟣Professor Hemant Kocher, who led today’s new study, is also running a clinical trial called STARPAC, which is testing a way to reduce the fortress of scar tissue that forms around pancreatic cancer. They hope that this will improve other treatments’ chances of breaching the cancer’s defences and defeating it. 🟣Professor Tatjana Crnogorac-Jurcevic is leading the UroPanc trial, which is investigating a way to spot early signs of pancreatic cancer in urine. This research could help us catch the disease at an earlier stage when it is easier to treat. 🟣Professor Claude Chelala and her team are investigating how we could design a blood test to detect fragments of DNA from pancreatic cancer cells. This could help doctors to track how the disease is evolving and tailor patients’ treatments to tackle their unique disease. Many more researchers across the BCI are studying pancreatic cancer from every angle.
