About Mr Sam Gidwani

Mr Sam Gidwani is a Consultant Hand and Wrist surgeon, based at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals, London. His practice is focused entirely on disorders and injuries of the hand, wrist and forearm. He regularly treats musicians, as well as professional and amateur sportsmen and women, and was one of the surgeons dealing with athletes' hand and wrist injuries during the 2012 London Olympics.

Mr Gidwani completed his orthopaedic training in 2006, and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma & Orthopaedics). He then spent two years in further training at specialist hand and wrist centres including the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby, and the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. This period of training culminated in the award of the British Hand Surgery Diploma. He began his consultant career at Guy's & St Thomas' in 2009. Between 2014 and 2017, he was the Clinical Lead of the Guy's Orthopaedic Department, one of the largest and busiest units in London.

As well as being a busy clinician, Mr Gidwani is actively involved in training junior surgeons; he previously served on the British Hand Surgery Society's Instructional Course Committee, and was co-founder and convener of the St Thomas' cadaveric hand trauma course. He keeps his own knowledge and skills up-to-date by regular attendance at national and international conferences, whether as a delegate or member of the teaching faculty. His research interests include the treatment of scaphoid fractures, and the use of joint replacement in the hand and wrist, and he now sits on the BSSH Research Committee.

Mr Gidwani, is extremely knowledgable and experienced within his field; he treats his patients with kindness and respect, and ensures that they feel included in the whole process of their care and treatment.

Mr Gidwani helped identify and treat my right scaphoid non-union. He provided me with an excellent overview of the issue, the risks, the options for treatment, and recovery. When assessing surgery, he explained exactly what would happen during the procedure and also provided me with the resources to do my own research. The surgery itself went smoothly, and we had regular check-ups to assess recovery and determine next steps. Six months out, the non-union has healed and I have most of my movement back. Mr Gidwani was pleasant, supportive, and understanding throughout.

Mr Gidwani explained the procedure to me on my initial consultation with him and answered all my questions which made me feel very reassured that I was in good hands. On the day of the procedure, whilst I was very anxious that I was going to be awake for the procedure with only a local anaesthetic, it was a first for me. However, Mr a Gidwani was so reassuring and explained exactly what to expect which put my mind and anxiety at completely ease. His entire surgical team were also so warm and so friendly it was difficult to not engage in a hearty conversation with the team whilst I was undergoing the procedure. I was shocked at my calm and relaxed composure, but at the same very time I was very pleasantly surprised. I was relieved when it was all over but I can honestly say that I would go through it all again if I had to. As long as I could have Dr Gidwani and the same team again.
