About Mr Nev Davies

Nev is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic (T&O) surgery working in Reading, UK. His NHS practice is based at The Royal Berkshire Hospital and he has worked there for the past 12 years. He consults privately from Spire Dunedin Hospital (Children & Adults) and Circle Hospital (Adults), both in Reading. His specialist interests are in children‘s orthopaedics and adult knee surgery. Nev's practice manager is Debbie Rollason who has worked closely with him for the last 8 years.

Career

In the year 2000, after 6 years of study and an intercalated BSc. in Neuroscience, Nev qualified as a Doctor from St Marys Hospital Medical School in London. In 2001 he completed his house jobs at St. Mary's and Wexham Park Hospital, and then started a 3-year basic surgical rotation in and around London. This included T&O jobs at Kingston Hospital and at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore. Nev then spent 6 years on the Oxford Specialist Registrar Rotation in T&O incorporating a children's fellowship at Westmead Kids in Sydney, Australia. He started his Consultant post at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2010 on his return from Australia and has built up a thriving private practice in Berkshire over the past decade. Nev is referred, and has treated patients from all over the UK. However, he works mainly within Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire.

Current clinical  practice

Nev has an interesting clinical practice as he treats all musculoskeletal conditions seen in children, as well as adult knee conditions. He is one of only a handful of surgeons in the UK who has expertise in treating knee problems in patients of all ages, from new-borns to elderly patients. He is often referred difficult cases for second opinions from all over the UK as well as overseas. Nev's other passion is in the prevention of children's sports injuries and is a trustee for Power Up to Play (www.poweruptoplay.org) a national charity tackling the exponential rise of knee injuries in young people.

Outside work

Out of work, Nev's busy life revolves around his extremely active family. He has a energetic family life with 3 sports mad boys 13,11 and 9 and a very sporty wife who is a GB triathlete and competes in Ironman events around the world. She is also a Consultant at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Although Nev's sporting love is rugby and in particular supporting Wales in Cardiff, he gets his current competitive buzz from playing golf.

Engagement with Debbie was great always very timely about providing appointment, arranging surgery, sending out letters etc (I see Debbie as being a key extension of the medical service that you provide) I found all of your consultations to be really thorough and well explained and not rushed. I always felt I had sufficient time for questions to be answered in a thorough way. Your letters also explained things in a thorough way that I could easily understand - thank you for that. A few small builds which hopefully will help you build on an excellent service that you currently provide: 1) at my first (and very thorough consultation) you did not have access to my MRI scan you only had access to the report. I question if you had viewed the scan, ahead of the surgery, would you then have had a better view of the issue - would the surgery have been necessary. Although I do appreciate sometimes the saying is treat the patient and not the scan. So I do accept I may be wrong? 2) a minor point your clinics ALWAYS run extremely late. I wonder if appointments should either be extended (as you provide a very thorugh service). Although I suspect the hospitals only allow you so many mins per patient? If that is the case could you consider seeing less patients. I (and I suspect others too) have a really busy job and I found this a little fustrating.

My last visit was a 6 month follow-up on my second TKR. The first knee had recovered very quickly, and so I was disappointed when the seond knee seemed to be taking longer. I was experiencIng pain in the gluteus muscles/hip area and down into the knee which was hampering my ability to walk very far or very well, although the knee itself felt stable. I had set myself a daily goal of 6000 steps or 25 minutes of continuous walking to try and improve matters. Mr Davies listened carefully to my explanation and then conducted a thorough examination. He reassured me that the knee was nice and straight and healing well, and that the hip was not part of the problem either. He suggested two different options - referral to a colleague in another discipline for further investigation or continue with my own programme of exercise with a telephone review in 3 months. I opted for the latter which proved to be the correct course of action, and have now been discharged by Mr Davies by mutual agreement. I have always found him to be very approachable and pragmatic. He explains things clearly, doesn't dismiss concerns, but offers simple and manageable solutions. I had a choice of 3 surgeons for these procedures but decided on Mr Davies because of his extensive expertise in this area and his commitment to ensuring better outcomes for his patients through on-going research.

From the moment I first met Mr Davies I had total confidence that he knew exactly what was going wrong with my knee and how he would correct it. On the morning of my operation he found time to come and talk to me and again soon after the operation he came in to assure that it had gone well. I saw him again about 2 weeks after the op to have the stitches removed and an x-ray to confirm that all was well and then again about 6 weeks later for another x-ray and some words of assurance, after which I was free to get on with my life, subject to some advice on what I should and should not do. I have just had my final consultation, which confirmed that my knee is doing well and will be back in full working order before too long. I could not have asked for better care and I have to put in a word for Debbie, Mr Davies's personal assistant, who was very helpful in dealing with some inefficient admin from the Circle.

Mr Davies and his team were excellent. I had a full knee replacement and everything was explained to me and any questions answered in full. He discussed with me how important it was to think through my expectations of how my knee would be after the operation. This reminded me that good recovery also needs work by the patient! My after care was well organised and the nursing staff ensured my stay in the hospital was very comfortable. Walking is much better now for which I am very grateful.

Mr Davies and Debbie, the practice manager, provided truly outstanding care. Their exceptional flexibility in arranging a consultation and MRI brought real peace of mind regarding my son’s knee injury. Their communication was impeccable—empathetic, sincere, and highly professional—clearly explaining the diagnosis and expected outcomes. Thanks to their expertise and support, my son was able to return to pre-season training with a well-structured rehabilitation programme. I cannot recommend this team highly enough and would not hesitate to return to them in the future.
