Professor Mark Westcott is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in cataract surgery, glaucoma, medical retina and inflammatory eye disease (uveitis). He practises privately at The London Clinic on Harley Street and within the private wing of Moorfields Eye Hospital. He and his team run one of the largest private ophthalmic practices in Central London. He provides thousands of consultations and more than 200 procedures each year, including cataract surgery, complex glaucoma surgery and laser treatments. Alongside his private work, he holds longstanding NHS consultant positions at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and at Barts and The Royal London NHS Trust, posts he has held since 2003.
Professor Westcott qualified in medicine from St Thomas’ Hospital in 1989 and completed his ophthalmology training in London, including at Moorfields Eye Hospital. During this period, he received funding from the Friends of Moorfields to undertake research that led to an MD thesis focused on visual function in glaucoma, which he completed in 1997. In 2000, he was awarded a national scholarship in ophthalmology to train at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA in Los Angeles, where he gained advanced expertise in glaucoma diagnosis and management and contributed further research into the early detection of glaucoma.
Professor Westcott has extensive experience in small incision cataract surgery and was one of the first surgeons in the UK to use microscopic stents for minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. He also has expertise in the use of femtosecond laser technology and advanced lens implants aimed at improving refractive outcomes. He leads the Glaucoma Service at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospital and provides specialist care for uveitis and ocular inflammatory disease at Moorfields Eye Hospital. In addition to his clinical roles, he is a Surgical Trainer for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where he teaches microsurgery and phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
Professor Westcott maintains an active academic and research career. He is a Visiting Adjunct Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and a Reader at Queen Mary University of London. His research interests include infectious and non-infectious uveitis, glaucoma-related visual loss and early diagnostic techniques. He has authored more than 70 scientific papers, co-authored a widely used textbook on uveitis and regularly reviews submissions for leading ophthalmic journals. He presents frequently at national and international scientific meetings and continues to contribute to research and specialist training within the field.

I was referred to Prof Westcott by my optician about 13 years ago as I needed to have cataract operations which he did and I have been under his care ever since. I have all sorts of problems with my eyes and he told me who to see when it iwas something he does not do himself. He always explains things so I understand what is needed and when I required injections in my eye he did the first three and then referred me to Moorfields Eye Hospital as my health cover would only pay for 3 injections. I would recommend him to anyone with eye problems without hesitation.
Professor Westcott met my expectations in all respects and provided an excellent outcome following cataract treatment.
Altogether a good visit - office staff and technical assistant were all charming and professional and Prof. Westcott was straightforward and clear in his examination and discussion.
As soon as I entered 119 Harley Street I was taken care of by various assistants so that I had had the correct tests before I saw Prof Westcott. It was a very reassuring and professional service. I was then seen by Prof Westcott who was, as usual, charming, reassuring and efficient during my visit as were his personal assistants afterwards in arranging my next appointment.
Professor Westcott has managed & treated my glaucoma since diagnosis in 2009 . He is very focused on his discipline and is open to trying treatment options to give best results for his patients
Mark Westcott is always very honest and straightforward in his assessment and advice
