Andrew is one of the UK’s most respected eye surgeons. He has more than 35 years’ experience in ophthalmology, with more than 15,000 vitrectomy procedures his name, and in excess of 25,000 cataract or refractive lens procedures.
Andrew began his career in general surgery, having trained in medicine first at Oxford University and then at Guy’s Hospital Medical School in London. He made the move into ophthalmology in 1988, training at Southampton’s highly regarded General Hospital and the world famous Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. The late 1980s was an exciting time for ophthalmology; eye surgery was experiencing huge leaps forward, from improved optics and micro-instrumentation to breakthrough cataract and macular treatments.
Andrew’s work has tracked many of those advances. He was one of the first British surgeons to use intravitreal injections (where medicines are injected into the vitreous of the eye to treat conditions like age-related macular degeneration or AMD). He remains an enthusiastic proponent of new technologies, such as the exciting Red Light Therapy for AMD.
As a high-volume surgeon who specialises in retinal and cataract surgery, Andrew is often asked to take on complex cases by colleagues. This includes issues like implant lens exchanges, ocular trauma, and eyes that have had difficult first procedures.
During his time in the NHS, he served as Clinical Service Director at Southampton General, playing a key role in establishing the Chair of Ophthalmology there. He continues to act as a reviewer for grant applications and lectures regularly to Optometrists and general practitioners. He now works full-time in the private sector.

Professor Andrew J Luff's patient interactions are professional, clear, and reassuring. Patients express high confidence in his skill, noting excellent results from eye procedures. His thorough explanations help patients understand their conditions and treatment options, including cataract surgery. Most common concerns were cataracts and related conditions, with successful surgery outcomes.
I was recently and specifically referred by my optician to Prof. Luff to have treatment on my cataracts. Over recent years I have suffered from oedema in my retina which was now relatively stable and I wanted to receive the highest level of treatment so as to avoid any impact on my retina and a return to the sight problems that I had previously. I understood that there was potential for this to occur with normal cataract surgery. From the time of my first appointment through to my cataract procedures, Prof. Luff was extremely professional, approachable, supportive and totally dedicated to providing the best outcomes possible for my eyes. He advised me on the lenses most suited for my eyes, fully explained what was going to happen and the surgery was then conducted within a few days. The cataract procedures took only about 15 to 20 minutes, I was put at ease throughout and they were totally painless. I can now genuinely say that cataract surgery is not something to be frightened of and is totally painless. My resulting eyesight is extremely good and any potential impact on my retina was completely avoided. I can only give Prof. Luff the highest praise and recommendation. If anyone is concerned about having treatment on.their eyes, eyesight is so important that I would say don't leave it too late and Prof. Luff would be the first port of call that I would highly recommend.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review. We’re truly grateful for your kind words and for placing your trust in Professor Luff, especially given the understandable concerns around your retinal health. It’s wonderful to hear that you felt well informed, supported, and at ease throughout the entire process, and that the outcome has met your expectations with such positive results for your eyesight. Your reassurance about the procedure will no doubt be encouraging to others who may be feeling anxious about cataract surgery. Prof. Luff and the team are committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for every patient, and your feedback means a great deal to us. Thank you again for your high recommendation, and we wish you continued good vision and health.
My experience was AMAZING! I was really surprised that there was no pain during or after the procedure. I was also surprised that whilst I was being operated on, I wasn't able to see any apparatus and was kept amazingly calm. The only thing I wasn't really prepared for was the moving black bubble that shook like a 'spirit level'. Although I was told about this in advance, I really hadn't appreciated how disorientating this was going to be. I'm sure this experience is the same for all people undergoing this procedure.
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful feedback! We’re delighted to hear that your experience was amazing and that you felt comfortable and pain-free throughout your procedure. Keeping our patients calm and at ease is always a top priority, so it’s great to know that the setup and care helped you feel relaxed. We also appreciate you mentioning the visual “black bubble” effect. Even with preparation, it can feel a bit unusual or disorienting, and your comment is a helpful reminder for us to continue explaining this clearly so patients know exactly what to expect. Thank you again for taking the time to leave such thoughtful feedback. We’re thrilled to have been part of your journey and wish you all the best with your continued recovery!

Professor was very friendly I felt at ease , he explained everything to me as to how the procedure would be done .I had no concerns about the operation.
Thank you for your lovely feedback! We're glad to hear you felt comfortable and well-informed throughout the process.
I must repeat myself. The care was second to none and frankly amongst the best i have ever had and i am 74 years old. Professor Luff, who operated, was in the background but the results are quite amazing with what i can only describe as 'perfect eyesight', both close up and at a distance. Then there was a nurse called Joan who went out of her way to help my anxiety and reassure me with all my many concerns. In short, Joan was amazing.
Thank you so much for your heartfelt feedback. We're truly delighted to hear that you had such a positive experience and are thrilled with the outcome of your procedure. Professor Luff and the entire team, especially Joan, will be so pleased to know the care and support made such a difference. Wishing you continued enjoyment of your “perfect eyesight”!
Outstanding professional eye surgery from Professor Luff who has been there for me through thick and thin and gave me a better quality of life through his excellent skills of removing vitreous floaters, thank you for all the hard work and dedication in helping me you are such a kind and amazing person and i think very highly of you. Eternally grateful Joe Y.

Professor Luff was extremely professional with explanations every step of the way. Natural concerns both before and after were handled in a very friendly and knowledgeable way giving me total confidence in him.

Surgery on eyes can obviously be frightening but the Professor clearly explained the procedures and potential benefits. My historical retinal detachment added to the initial concerns but the Professor was reassuring about this. The supporting documents provided made the risks clear. With the worsening of my vision the cataract surgery on both eyes was a clear benefit out weighing the risks. The result using Galaxy tri focal lenses is astounding! Notably night driving without halo effects that were evident with my previous contact lenses. With improved peripheral vision and 20-20 vision the Professor delivered a miracle.
Thank you so much for your review! We're delighted to hear that you felt reassured throughout the process and that you're enjoying such excellent results with your vision. It's wonderful to know the outcome has had such a positive impact on your daily life. We'll be sure to pass on your kind words to the Professor and the team!
