About Dr Matthew Knight

Dr Knight is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust and the Chief Medical Officer and Responsible Officer at Medefer. He sees patients privately with respiratory problems such as breathlessness, cough and chest pain at The Clementine Churchill Hospital in north London and OSD Healthcare in Hemel Hempstead.

Dr Knight has an interest in unexplained breathlessness, and regularly performs cardio-pulmonary exercise testing (CPEX) alongside standard clinical assessment. He is actively involved in research and has published widely over recent years, most latterly around Long Covid, out of hospital management of respiratory diseases and the role of technology in remote care of patients. Along with Dr Andy Barlow and colleagues from NHSX he pioneered some of the early work on Virtual Covid Wards, for which he was made an MBE.

He qualified from University College London in 2005 and undertook respiratory speciality training in the northwest Thames Respiratory training programme, rotating via the Royal Free, Hammersmith, Royal Brompton, Harefield, Barnet, Northwick Park and Watford General hospitals. He also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Allergy Medicine at Imperial College London.

He is actively involved with the specialist training and education of junior doctors both locally in Watford and previously at a national level with Health Education England where he was an Associate Postgraduate Dean. He sits as a non-executive director on the board of Penrose Care, a registered provider of home care services in northwest London.

Dr Knight manages patients with a wide range of respiratory problems, but has a particular interest in the following areas of Respiratory Medicine:

  • Unexplained Breathlessness assessment
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Testing
  • Cough and wheeze
  • Pleural diseases
  • Asthma and Respiratory allergies
  • Recurrent chest infections and fever
  • Sleep Apnoea
  • Lung cancer (diagnosis and screening)
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Dr Knight works closely with his colleagues in the Chest Clinic as well as colleagues in Respiratory Physiology, Cardiology, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Radiology and Thoracic surgery to ensure that patients treated by him receive the best possible care.

Recent publications/media

In a nutshell Dr Knight saved my life. When I went to see him I had chest pain issues for a few months which my GP surgery had assumed was a winter flu bug. Dr Knight immediately organised a referral to the heart specialist and it transpired my issues were so serious that I needed a heart bypass immediately. I am now close to recovery and doing well. Thank you Dr Knight and all the staff at the Clementine Churchill hospital.
